Daniel Amrhein at AASU BFA exhibition

The opening reception for AASU's BFA exhibition is this Friday, 6:30 pm, Suite 1216 on the 1st floor of the Savannah Mall. The artists will each give a short talk about their work. Refreshments are provided by Bonefish Grill and Polk's Fresh Produce Market. This event is free and open to the public.

The exhibition will run from April 23-May 9th, Mon.-Fri. 2-8 pm, Sat. 12-8 pm, and Sun. 12-6 pm.

Come check this out, my boyfriend will be there along with his awesome paintings and jewelry!

i'm baaaa-aaaack!

After a really hectic, stressful, hard couple of months, I am back at last.
I moved to Atlanta for a job, leaving behind one of my cats, my amazing boyfriend, my wonderful friends, and my awesome internship gig with all the lovely people at South magazine.
Suffice it to say, I was not really thrilled about this move.
But you know what? I'm here now, so I'm going to turn this into something really good.

Cheers to new beginnings.

As part of my fresh start, I'm going to begin actually using all this art school knowledge that has been sitting in the forgotten corners of my brain for almost 2 years. I am a little rusty, so I've been trying to do some practice pieces to get back into it. They're not great, but they're something, and they're going to be the stepping stones that lead me back to where I want to be.
So enjoy, and let me know what you think.

Barcelona chair

This little illustration is for a blog about the first 24e Furniture Design Awards tomorrow night. I could not pass up the opportunity to depict one of my very favorite chairs, Mies van der Rohe's Barcelona chair! I painted it a nice red-orange because I am a little bit obsessed with that color right now.
So, if anybody's out there, what is your favorite chair?

Confession: I love Valentine's Day. I don't love the cheesy, stereotypical ads, or the marginalization of single people, or the emphasis on indiscriminate consumption. However, when you scrape all that away, it's just a day to tell people that you love them, and I think that's pretty awesome.
While you're at it this Valentine's Day, how about showing a little love to local businesses? Besides helping the local economy, shopping local can be a great way to find a gift that is as unique as your relationship.

I can't wait for spring. Don't get me wrong, I've been enjoying the cool weather, but I'm tired of gray and brown. I want, nay, I need fuchsia, violet, scarlet, some happy orange, yellow, and gold. I need some green trees. I need the sun shining through little baby leaves of chartreuse. Patience, you say? What's that?

Savannah

Sometimes the daily grind gets me down, but when I look around me and remember that I'm living in this gorgeous, historic city, it makes even the tedious errands and chores seem pleasant.
Lately I have been trying to leave early enough that I can park at the Savannah Civic Center and walk to work. It's kind of a hike, but it allows me to enjoy quite a few squares and beautiful old houses on my way.
I did these quick pen and ink drawings a while back, and totally forgot I had done them. They're a nice excuse to go sit in the park, and a good exercise for my rusty drawing skills! I am definitely going to be doing more of these when it gets a little warmer out.

This statue features General James Oglethorpe, the founder of Georgia. Mr. Oglethorpe is facing south, towards Spanish Florida, hence the drawn sword. You'd think this monument would be in Oglethorpe Square, but you'd be wrong. For some reason it's actually in Chippewa Square. Random movie fact: The Forrest Gump park bench scene was shot on the north end of Chippewa Square!
I love this house! This sketch really doesn't do it justice at all. When I lived by Forsyth Park, I would walk by this house every day on my way to class. I think it deserves a better portrait, so this will be first on my list of plein-air sketching spots.

Internship!

I know I have been neglecting my little blog lately, but I have a good reason! I have been interning at The South Magazine, where I get to watch and learn from the awesome editorial crew. They even let me do some blogging!

I am especially in love with Andy Kehoe's work; I had the pleasure of seeing one of his shows at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery a couple of years ago. His landscapes remind me so much of American folk paintings like this one, but with a sinister air and a decidedly less savory cast of characters.

Botanical studies

Growing up in Augusta, our yard was bordered by a row of beautiful fuchsia crepe myrtles. My friends and I used to love plucking the unopened buds off the trees and pinching them so their vivid petals emerged. As gorgeous as the blooms are, though, I have always loved the dried out seed pods best. I never get tired of drawing these little guys! They are so lovely and geometric, like origami.

I'm not sure what this vine is, but it has really pretty pastel yellow flowers. I must confess that this is one of the specimens I nabbed out of a neighbor's garden when I lived in the dorms by Forsyth Park. So, to that unknown victim of garden pilfering, thank you for supporting the arts. :)

Night of the Living Pumpkins

I just adore Halloween, and so does the boyfriend. I mean, candy, zombie movies, the wonderful gooshiness of pumpkin innards...What could be better?! This Halloween we went all out and carved a veritable horde of pumpkins, ten in all. We had a FrankenPumpkin, lots of little zombie pumpkins, and even siamese twins! Hmm, how will we top this next year?

flower studies

I did a LOT of these flower studies a while back, and I just fell in love with the look of sepia ink on this lovely warm paper. I am in the process of scanning them all, and then I will be selling prints of my favorites.
